Grant Frequently Asked Questions

Your quick guide to applying for our grants.

Projects or programs must benefit the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and must fall within one or more of the Foundation’s statutory objects. As defined in the Law Society Act, 1999, these include legal education and legal research, law reform, the establishment, operation and maintenance of a legal referral service for the residents of the province, the establishment, operation and maintenance of law libraries, and the provision of scholarships for studies in matters relevant to law.

Both individuals and organizations based in Newfoundland and Labrador are welcome to apply, provided their proposed project or programme meets the eligibility criteria.

The Board considers a variety of factors, including alignment with the Foundation’s statutory objectives, whether residents of the province are involved or will benefit, the availability of alternative or matching funding, and the overall budget available for grantmaking in a given year.

Prospective applicants should contact the Executive Director of the Foundation by email or telephone in order to discuss their concept before applying.

The grant application form is available for download on the Foundation’s website under the “Grants” section. Applicants should complete and submit the form in accordance with the instructions provided. Questions should be directed to the Executive Director.

The Foundation offers two primary scholarship streams: an Entrance Scholarship valued at $10,000 for residents of Newfoundland & Labrador entering the first year of a Canadian law school, and Upper-Year Law School Scholarships valued at $5,000 each for Newfoundland and Labrador residents who have completed their first or second year of law school and intend to return to practice in Newfoundland & Labrador.

To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Newfoundland & Labrador and must be enrolled in a Canadian law school recognized by the Foundation’s Scholarships Committee. For the Entrance Scholarship this means first-year studies. For the Upper-Year Scholarship this means first or second year of law school.

Applications are judged primarily on academic excellence, and for the Upper-Year program the applicant's demonstrated intent to return to Newfoundland & Labrador to practise law. is also considered. Merit based on academic achievement is the primary decision-making factor.

For the 2026-27 academic year the application deadline for both the Entrance and Upper-Year scholarships is June 1, 2026. Award decisions are announced before September of the same year.

Three Entrance Scholarships are awarded and are valued at $10,000 for each recipient. The Upper-Year Law School Scholarships are valued at $5,000, and three winners will also be selected in this category.
